Quote Wednesday — Hayakawa

“It is not true that we have only one life to live; if we can read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish.” — S.I. Hayakawa

I love this quote!  I think I have followed this philosophy ever since I was little.  I love reading, losing myself in fantastical stories.  I love connecting to a character or a world.  I love getting sucked in.  Books are escapes.  Books show us other ways of life and thinking.  Books can be therapy.  Books are the among the best things in this world.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to get back to my book.  It’s too good to leave alone for too long.

Quote Wednesday – Bradbury

You must lurk in libraries and climb the stacks like ladders to sniff books like perfumes and wear books like hats upon your crazy heads.
Ray Bradbury

This quote just brightened my day!  Hope it brightens yours!

Quote Wednesday — FDR

“Books can not be killed by fire. People die, but books never die. No man and no force can abolish memory…in this war, we know, books are weapons. And it is a part of your dedication always to make them weapons for man’s freedom.” — FDR

Thank you Mr. President!  Books are immortal.  We shall use them to fight the injustice and the obstacles. We can do it.  And you know how????

By supporting and patronizing our local libraries!  I do it, and you should too!

Can you guess who just got a library card?  Me!!!!!  I finally got an addressed and postmarked piece of mail so I could activate my Omaha Public Library cards.  The boys and I went in last night, activated them, received a prize for already completing the first summer reading program level, and checked out more books.  I am a little disappointed in the selection.  But that’s because my old library was one of the best in the nation (and that’s not just me talking, they were given an honor).  Even with some slight shortcomings, I am still in love with the local library.

I already checked out three books.  Unfortunately, two of them are part of a series (and it’s not the first book).  That’s okay, I’ll find the others in the series tomorrow when I visit another branch!  I love the library!!!!!

Highlight of the Week — Books, books, and more books!

I’ve haven’t done one of these in the last couple of weeks, so I thought I would get back into the swing of things this week.  So… what was my highlight of the week?

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about books.  I signed up for many reading challenges for the year, have been reading blogs about books, added to my “To Be Read” list, and went to the library multiple times.  I love wandering the stacks finding interesting books.  Sometimes I have a list, sometimes i just choose an aisle and look at the shelves, and sometimes I let covers catch my eye.  On Friday afternoon, I had the urge to go book shopping.  I don’t have much extra money lying around, but I thought I would just go look at the used book stores.  I went to Half Price Books and what did I find?  A whole ton of awesome $1 clearance books.  I love it when I find bargains.  So I went a little crazy.  I bought 13 books and it cost me a total of $20 (two books were a bit more than $1, but they are on my reading challenges list).  I got up to the register and the clerk had a surprised look on her face when I plopped them all down.  But she just rang of my books and then said, “I bet you want a bag today.”  Yes, yes I did.  Usually I request no bag if it’s just a few books, but 13 was pushing the limit.  Add my ridiculous clumsiness and snow on the ground, and I got a bag.  As I hauled my loot out of the store, I started thinking, which one am I going to read first? Very difficult question… but as it turns out I chose to read a library book instead of my new treasures.  They will have to wait until next week.

Quote Wednesday — Carroll

“And what is the use of a book, thought Alice, without pictures or conversations?” — Lewis Carroll

Some days I agree with Alice.  I love books with pictures and visuals.  I love graphs and tables.  I love little illustrations here and there.  One of my favorites as of late has been Dawn of the Dreadfuls which had great line drawings of zombies and mid-action shots.  They were a great surprise.  Plus the cover is all kinds of awesome.  I also just checked out Freakanomics, the illustrated edition, from the library.  I loved the book before, but so much more with the inclusion of graphs, charts, and cartoons.  It really added to the experience.  As a bonus, it kept me focused on the page.  I didn’t wander away at all, instead really focusing on the text because I was drawn in by the visuals.

So, Alice it’s okay.  You can expect pictures and conversations from books.  They make the written word that much more enjoyable.
